Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic Conductor Search


The NEPP is looking for its next Music Director. The winning candidate will bring new excitement to the orchestra, enhancing its artistic excellence, attracting new audiences and drawing on all aspects of the community to ensure the Philharmonic’s continued vitality.

Founded in 1972, the NEPP currently performs six series concerts, one educational series and four chamber concerts each season. The Philharmonic regularly features its own musicians and often engages solo artists of international acclaim. These have included pianists Fei-Fei Dong, Spencer Meyer, and Jon Nakamatsu, and violinists Anne Akiko Meyers and Yevgeny Kutik. The NEPP has 41 professional core musicians on its roster, supplemented with strong substitutes, and is supported by a committed 22-member Board of Directors.


  • Provide artistic vision as conductor and artistic director for a professional orchestra with a $650K annual budget
  • Conduct six concert series and other performances
  • Lead the Artistic Committee in the choice of program repertoire and selection of guest soloists to engage the community, with programs that carry out the orchestra’s mission, and are sensitive to budgetary considerations.
  • Participate in fundraising efforts and develop strong relationships with donors
  • Present pre-concert lectures and make school visits
  • Make public appearances, videos, and media interviews for promotion and marketing purposes


  • A graduate music degreefrom a recognized conducting program with experience in a professional or academic setting, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of orchestral repertoire and styles.
  • A clear understanding of the dynamic between the musicians, their union, and the music director.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment in building audiences.
  • Demonstrated commitment to innovative and engaging programming.
  • An artistic vision for varied educational and outreach initiatives.
  • Familiarity with fundraising and donor relations. Willingness and experience in donor cultivation.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
  • Public speaking experience.

Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications
